Issues and Solutions

ISSUES

We have long advocated that Alberta’s public education system should be founded on an unwavering commitment to fully develop the gifts, talents and potential of all of our children and youth.

The tabling of Bill 2 , the Education Act, does propose a revised legislative framework for Alberta’s K-12 system, but it is very general and does not give a clear indication of the government’s priorities, policies or programs for bringing about improvements that are badly needed if we are serious about developing the full potential of all students.

SOLUTIONS

Public education is of vital concern to all Albertans, and it is essential that in the coming provincial election citizens press all candidates and parties to clearly state their priorities for action in Alberta’s classrooms. To that end, Public Interest Alberta recommends the following six proposals as having the most potential to improve our ability to meet the educational needs of all of the province’s students, and to make the biggest difference in improving education in our province.

  1. Improvements to early learning.
  2. Coordinated delivery of non-educational services to children at the school site.
  3. More effective language learning supports for immigrant children and families.
  4. Clear commitment to maintaining existing schools and building new schools where they are needed.
  5. A renewed emphasis on the arts, trades, and language learning in our classrooms.
  6. More effective supports for children with special needs
