Don't Cut Us Out Campaign
In response to the Government of Alberta’s threat to cut public services, including post-secondary education, last year Public Interest Alberta’s Task Force on Post-Secondary Education launched a province-wide campaign to make the case for investment rather than cuts in these difficult economic times.
Since the launch of our campaign the Government of Alberta made good on that threat, cutting $205 million from the Alberta Advanced Education and Technology budget including $55.6 million from student financial aid. The cuts were followed up by tuition increases being allowed in some programs by up to 70%, making post-secondary education increasingly unaffordable for many Albertans.
These cuts have been mirrored by cuts to other public services, which is why our task force is building alliances with other groups as well as building a network of advocates throughout Alberta to engage decision-makers and demand a better quality and more accessible and affordable post-secondary education system.
