Moratorium on LTC conversions

In recent years, the government has encouraged the conversion of long term care (LTC) beds to assisted living and has actually paid the operators of these facilities to downgrade them.

When these conversions occur, nursing and personal care are drastically reduced and the cost of whatever care remains is passed on to the residents or their families. Seniors often have to move out of their communities to access the care they require.

The government must commit to ending the conversion of LTC facilities to Assisted Living.

PIA's Seniors Task Force has identified five steps that would significantly improve conditions for Alberta seniors:

  1. Provide quality public home care
  2. Ensure quality, affordable long-term care (LTC) facilities
  3. A moratorium on converting LTC facilities to assisted living
  4. Create advisory councils in all seniors care facilities
  5. Appoint an Independent Seniors Advocate
