Provide quality public home care

Seniors want to stay in their own homes as long as possible and this is consistent with the government’s “Aging in Place” policy, thereby easing the strain on the health care system. However, seniors are being driven from their own homes by the lack of support services and the total inadequacy of the public home care system.

The void created by the lack of adequate public home care has been filled by private-for-profit home care agencies whose services are generally unreliable and unaffordable for most seniors.

The government must commit to making quality public home care available to all Alberta seniors who require such services.

PIA's Seniors Task Force has identified five steps that would significantly improve conditions for Alberta seniors:

  1. Provide quality public home care
  2. Ensure quality, affordable long-term care (LTC) facilities
  3. A moratorium on converting LTC facilities to assisted living
  4. Create advisory councils in all seniors care facilities
  5. Appoint an Independent Seniors Advocate
