Public Interest Alberta Comments on Throne Speech 2012

Media Release
February 7, 2012

The only real commitment to support for public services seems to be an unknown commitment to education, post-secondary education and cities, but it remains to be seen whether this will even keep pace with Alberta’s inflation and growing population.

There is no commitment to address the revenue problems of our low flat tax and corporate taxes, and royalties.

There is nothing in the Speech from the Throne that recognizes the level of poverty that exists in Alberta, or a commitment to support Alberta’s most vulnerable.

The Speech from the Throne feeds sweet nothings to seniors while seniors are looking for a substantive commitment to resolve the crisis in seniors care.

If Bill 1 is to do results-based budgeting then Albertans should demand real results not warmed over platitudes.
